    Tree Planting Tips

Please call the office for availability of tree species

Whether you are planting a tree in your yard or an entire tree belt in a field, there are a few tree planting tips that you can follow to ensure that your trees have a good start. Our tree species vary year-to-year, and are only available to order from October to May — setting you up for a great spring.

The only type of trees that are available to purchase through the Upper Niobrara White NRD are conservation-grade seedlings. These trees are 2 to 3 years of age from seed and are usually no more than 2 feet tall. A variety of evergreens, deciduous trees and shrubs are available in the spring – both potted and bare root. If you will be planting larger trees and shrubs, you should contact your local nursery for more information.

Potted versus bare root trees are shown here:

The best time to plant your trees is in the early spring or fall – they need time to acclimate to their surroundings before intense heat or cold sets in. UNWNRD trees are only available in the spring.

If you or your family has recently had a new addition born in the Upper Niobrara White NRD (Dawes, Box Butte, Sheridan or Northern Sioux counties), we would be happy to donate a tree seedling or shrub for you to plant in their honor. Please call 308.432.6190 for best selection or click on the link below to fill the quick application and mail to our office.
